10TH HONG KONG FORUM: HONG KONG SHINES!

Sixteen representatives from Victoria attended this year Hong Kong Forum during December 1-2. This most impressive function once again confirmed why all HKABA members should try and attend if they are serious about conducting business in Hong Kong. All who attended this year intend to go back for the 2010 Forum.

The Forum was generously supported by hundreds of delegates from Hong Kong Business Associations across the world. The atmosphere was exciting as delegates were keen to meet as many fellow attendees as possible and to share their interest and success stories in conducting business in Hong Kong.

The Victorian delegation was made up of HKABA Vic members plus delegation from City of Melbourne led by the Deputy Lord Mayor, Susan Riley. The delegation from City of Melbourne also attended SME Expo which was held from 3rd to 5th December 2009 at the Hong Kong Convention Centre.

A big thank you for the City of Melbourne for their ongoing support.

The agenda was nothing short of amazing. We listened to an incredible collection of leading local speakers including senior Government Ministers, successful business leaders from multinational corporations and small business managers. They all had the same story; Hong Kong is a wonderful place and with a very supportive business environment. It definitely is a can do business place.

It was not all lectures! The organisers provided memorable functions: a get-to- know-you cocktail evening and a Hong Kong in the 60s themed evening at one of Hong Kong?s heritage venues. Check out the photos!

Another highlight of the forums is the Speed-dating segment whereby international attendees get the opportunity to meet a range of local Hong Kong business people in rapid 6 minute sessions. It was a mind boggling sight to see business cards being exchanged with the speed of light!!!!! A great venue for networking and introductory business deals.

The venue for most of the activities was the majestic Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on Victoria Harbour. By day the venue provided a backdrop for this bustling world famous shipping harbour and by night the harbour exploded in an incredible display of lighting from the many tall buildings surrounding the harbour.

Who wants to join us next year?

Can you afford to miss this event in 2010?

PRESIDENT ANNUAL REPORT
(THIS REPORT WAS TABLED AT THE AGM ON NOVEMBER 4, 2009)

THE YEAR IN REVIEW

2009 has been marked by the continual progress towards strategic initiatives identified by and undertaken by the Executive Committee of the Victorian Chapter. The Committee wants to further develop and progress the value proposition and membership standing of the Victorian Chapter.

The year has been one of challenge and satisfaction. In spite of the challenges from the worldwide global financial crisis, a great deal of satisfaction has been generated from the very strong and positive results gained from Major Event initiatives, particularly the re-activation of the Business Awards Gala Dinner after 2 years absence.

NEW INITIATIVES

When the Committee was elected 12 months ago we undertook to strengthen our communication with the membership and to put in place initiatives to ensure we fully understand what the members wanted out of the HKABA, Vic Chapter. One of the initiatives we undertook in this area was to launch a membership survey. It was designed to ask members about their priorities as members. This survey has provided us with valuable information and has assisted us in organising events for our members. The survey will be repeated in 2010.

Other important initiatives have included:

-Publishing a monthly newsletter that provides better communication with our members.

-Successfully launching our own chapter website:http://www.hkaba-vic.com.au.

-Launching a HKABA Vic dedicated phone line (1300322072) in December 2008.

-Moving our official address to 37/131 La Trobe St, Melbourne in order to save costs.

FUNCTIONS AND SPECIAL EVENTS

During 2009 the Victorian Chapter held a number of diverse and significant member networking functions. These functions and events included:

- A reception to meet Mr Michael Suen Ming Yeung, Secretary for Education, HKSARG; was held on 2 December 2008 at the Melbourne Town Hall.

- Co-hosting the traditional Chinese New Year Function in conjunction with the HKETO and HKTDC.

- A Business Forum on 8th April where more than 50 members and business associates took part.

- An economic and trade forum in conjunction with the Hong Kong Trade Development Council was held at Crown Casino In May.

- A special function hosted by the Rt. Honorable the Lord Mayor of Melbourne Robert Doyle in conjunction with Hong Kong Australia Business Association, Hong Kong Trade Development Council and InvestHK was held in July at the Melbourne Town Hall.

- Our first networking Yum Cha Luncheon was held on July 17 at the Plume Chinese Restaurant in Doncaster.

- Our 10th Business Awards Gala Dinner resumed in August this year after 2 year?s absence. This successful event was held at the Crown Casino and more than 250 members and guests attended this function including representatives from HKABA Committees nationally.

- Our first winery tour to the Yarra Valley Winery Region was held on 4th September 2009.

- City of Melbourne and Australian Industry Group have decided to promote a trade mission to attend HK Forum and World SME in December. The deputy mayor, Susan Riley, will be leading the delegation.

MEMBERSHIP

As a direct result of our new initiatives and successful events held during the year, we are pleased to advise that we have increased of members by more than 30. We would like to extend a warm welcome to our new members who are here with us for the first time.

BUSH FIRE DONATION

HKABA Victoria Chapter has made a donation to help bushfire victims to rebuild their lives after the terrible bushfires, especially in Victoria.

FRED HOLLOWS FOUNDATION

We have assisted the Foundation by donating full proceeds from sale of raffle tickets and auction items at the Business Awards Gala Dinner.

FINANCIALS

A set of accounts for the financial year June 30, 2009 has been tabled for information and reference. As at September 30, the Victorian Chapter had over $32,000 in cash.

FUTURE

With a committed and effective Executive Committee and the adoption and implementation of new measures to attract new members and provide ongoing interest and value for sponsors, 2010 promises to continue to loom as an exciting year with a number of innovative events. The improvement in the Hong Kong and national economies will continue to impact positively on the HKABA and Hong Kong.

Further initiatives include the targeting of university students members and young professionals.

I am indeed heartened by the initiatives and support exhibited by the core base of the Committee for the hard work displayed during the year.
Simon Pho, President - Victorian Chapter 2009

Feedback From Des McGowan On Hong Kong Forum 2008

For any member of the HKABA-Vic the opportunity to attend the Hong Kong Forum 2009 should not be missed.

I attended last year and found the organization of the Forum, the quality of speakers, the range of networking opportunities (at both a national and international scale) and the social functions were extraordinarily good.

The Forum represents a fantastic opportunity for all members of HKABA-Vic to see for themselves what awesome opportunities there are for conducting business in Hong Kong and to understand the range of support available fo establishing and growing business in Hong Kong.

Members would appreciate that in the current economic climate the costs of attending the Forum are always kept reasonable. Members attend to their own travel and accommodation arrangements.

I look forward to seeing you at Hong Kong on 1 - 2 December this year and helping to contribute to a really strong Victorian contingent and presence.

How Invest HK Can Help Your Company

Since its establishment in 2000, Invest Hong Kong (Invest HK), the HKSAR Government?s foreign investment attraction agency, has helped over 1,500 international companies set-up and expand in Hong Kong.

Invest HK is now headed by Cameron Boardman, a former Member of the Victorian Parliament who has been the Melbourne representative of Invest HK for the past five years.

With a shrinking domestic market, many Australian companies are looking elsewhere to grow their business, and Hong Kong is an ideal location. With two-way trade between Australia and Hong Kong and China doubling since 2003-2004, Australian companies are becoming more active in Hong Kong and China, with many opportunities still to be untapped.

To access these opportunities, Australian companies must have the right support and assistance. By providing a complimentary and confidential service, Invest HK can offer information and advice on market opportunities, the steps involved in setting up a business, and how to expand once you are there.

If you wish to set up or grow your business in Hong Kong, China or within Asia, you should talk to Cameron and Invest HK. With a strong Australian team and local industry experts in Hong Kong, Invest HK is ready to make your international business a success.
